華盛頓哥倫比亞特區 – 2024年11月20日，星期三 – 今日, 全美亞太裔耆老中心（NAPCA）在華盛頓哥倫比亞特區主辦了一場簡報會議，深入探討了亞裔、夏威夷原住民及太平洋島民（AA&NHPI）社區中存在的肥胖問題及相關疾病問題進行簡報。此次簡報會議彙聚了國會議員、醫療專家及超過60名與會者。 在活動期間，NAPCA主席兼首席執行官Clayton S. Fong對國會議員Michelle Steel和Marilyn Strickland 表達了由衷感謝。Fong表示：“我們感謝Steel議員主持了此次頗具意義的簡報會議。Steel議員一直以來都是亞太裔社區的堅定支持者，她積極推動為亞太裔社區提供量身定制且符合母語需求的各項服務。”此外，他特別提及了Strickland議員精彩的開場致辭，並補充：“Strickland議員分享的親身經歷展示了她對語言和文化友好服務的需求的深刻理解。她分享了小時候幫助只會說韓語的母親應對醫療問題的經歷，令人動容，這也讓我們看到了她在這些重要議題上的深厚情感與堅定立場。” 肥胖領域研究專家及Ethnoworks聯合創始人Soo-Young Chin博士以NAPCA發佈的題為《瞭解夏威夷原住民及太平洋島裔美國人的肥胖問題》報告為開篇發表演講。Chin博士著重指出，夏威夷原住民及太平洋島裔美國人的肥胖率顯著高於美國整體人口的平均水準，並且長期持續處於較高水準，但這些資料往往被籠統的資料統計所遮蔽，未能得到足夠的關注與重視。 猶他州太平洋島民健康聯盟 (UPIHC) 執行董事 Ofa Matagi呼籲應當提供分類資料，強調在處理資料時應對亞裔、夏威夷原住民及太平洋島民社區進行分拆處理，而不應將其視為一個籠統的單一群體。此外，Matagi還著重強調了預防和干預策略中融入文化習俗和語言差異的重要性。 Joslin糖尿病中心的註冊營養師、認證糖尿病護理師與教育專家Ka Hei Karen Lau強調了為特定群體提供量身定制的解決方案的重要性，就好比Joslin糖尿病中心所提供的符合文化習慣的食譜。Lau 還提到，儘管亞裔美國人的平均身體品質指數（BMI）相對較低，但肥胖相關疾病的發生率卻居高不下。這一現象表明，以歐洲為中心的BMI標準可能無法充分反映亞裔、夏威夷原住民及太平洋島民群體的健康風險，因此有必要在較低的BMI閾值數（BMI 23）進行篩查，以便預防和護理。 Clayton S. Fong 總結道： “與刻板印象相反，在我們的社區，不是每一個人都富有、常春藤名校畢業或身材苗條。肥胖及其相關疾病已成為一個日益嚴峻的重要問題。在致力於提升國家整體健康狀況的過程中，我們必須積極宣導，並將亞裔、夏威夷原住民及太平洋島民社區的多樣化需求納入考量與討論之中。”
