Elk Grove, Ca…— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito &Vector Control District announced today that further evidence of West Nile virus activity (WNV) has been detected throughout areas of Sacramento and Yolo counties as 14 mosquito samples and one dead bird tested positive today. The mosquito samples and dead bird were been collected from different locations; however most of the WNV activity is concentrated in urban areas within the city of Sacramento. Areas that are closely being monitored due to an increase in activity include Elder Creek Rd. and Florin Rd. west of Power Inn Rd. “The mosquito and West Nile virus season is definitely underway and it is important for residents to be mindful and prevent mosquitoes from breeding in their back yard,” said Gary Goodman, District Manager. “Everyone should take the necessary precautions to avoid being bitten,” he added.
This week, the District’s surveillance program detected an increase in virus activity and overall mosquito populations due to the warming temperatures. Hot weather accelerates the mosquito lifecycle and can quickly amplify the virus putting residents at a higher risk. “The summer season is here and triple digit temperatures are expected over the next couple of days, so we will likely continue to see increased activity,” said Goodman. “We continue to ask for everyone’s cooperation in draining all backyard mosquito sources and wearing an effective mosquito repellent when spending time outdoors,” he added. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using an insect repellent that contains the active ingredients DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or the plant based Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
In response to the recent findings, the District has increased its surveillance and started ground fogging around areas where positive mosquitoes and birds have been found.

2023 West Nile virus activity update:
Sacramento County: 15 dead birds and 19 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus to date.
Yolo County: 1 dead bird and 4 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus to date
Practice the District D’s of Mosquito Prevention:
DRAIN standing water that may produce mosquitoes.
DAWN and DUSK are times to avoid being outdoors.
DRESS appropriately be wearing long sleeves and pants when outside.
DEFEND yourself by using an effective insect repellent. Make sure to follow label directions!
DOOR and window screens should be in good working condition.
