Great Plates like CPR for struggling restaurants

Program has delivered more than 9.1 million hot meals statewide to seniors during pandemic

DALY CITY – San Mateo County Supervisor David J. Canepa will hold a press conference, 11 a.m., Friday, September 11 at Maharlika Restaurant, 7367 Mission Road, Daly City to highlight the state’s Great Plates program, which provides food for sheltered seniors and supports restaurants financially impacted by COVID-19.

Canepa made the following statement today after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the Great Plates program has delivered more than 9.1 million meals to seniors and has supported nearly 9,000 jobs statewide since the COVID-19 shelter in place order was implemented in March.

“For restaurants such as Maharlika, Great Plates has been like the kiss of life during this crippling pandemic,” Canepa said. “It’s like life-saving CPR in a setting where 44 percent of small business owners in the state believe that they will have to close in the near future. This program provides hot meals for our most vulnerable residents and keeps people working while we fight to get past COVID and return to some sense of normalcy. Gov. Newsom deserves great praise for recognizing the need for this program and extending it until October.”

In San Mateo County, the program supports 60 restaurants, including Club Maharlika in Daly City. Combined, the restaurants have provided nearly 495,000 hot meals to 2,553 seniors in San Mateo County. Gov. Newsom has extended the program until October 9, 2020.

Maharlika Restaurant owners stated:

“We would literally be closed if it were not for Great Plates. With no indoor dining, we have seen business drop almost 90 percent. This program has given us hope that we can survive this pandemic, provide jobs and continue to serve our loyal customers. It’s a lifeline and a blessing to know that our leaders in the state and county are looking out for us, that they will not let us die because of COVID.”

The restaurant will be packing hot meals for delivery during the press conference.
