Do you have a driver license knowledge or skills test that expired on or after March 1, 2020? If you haven’t already, now is the time to finish the permitting and/or licensing process. Your temporary extension ends soon.
Early in the pandemic, we decided to accept these expired tests until further notice due to office and training school closures/restrictions that limited customers’ ability to access services. We’ve been accepting them for learner permit and driver license issuance since.
This grace period ends July 1, 2022. That’s when pre-pandemic requirements go back into effect: passing scores on knowledge tests will be good for two years, skills tests for one year. Exceptions will no longer be granted.
Act now to ensure you don’t have to retake your tests. Please complete any remaining testing and/or get your permit or license as soon as possible.
Don’t wait until the last minute to make an appointment at a driver licensing office. It could take several weeks to get a time slot at your desired location.
If you visit an office without an appointment, we’ll do our best to work you in as quickly as possible. However, you may have a long wait or be scheduled to return another day.
If you have questions about the status of your test or what you need to do, please call 360-902-3900.

Expired motorcycle exams and courses won’t be accepted after June 2022
Early in the pandemic, we decided to temporarily extend motorcycle exams/courses that expired on or after March 1, 2020. This was due to customers having limited access to services at driver licensing offices and motorcycle training schools. We’ve been accepting these expired tests for permit and endorsement issuance ever since.
As of July 1, 2022, these extensions will end. This means expired exams or courses will no longer be accepted after June 30. Passing results will revert to pre-pandemic requirements, making them valid for 180 days.
Customers are encouraged to complete the testing and endorsement process before July. Failure to do so will likely result in the retaking of tests.
If you need to visit a driver licensing office, please don’t wait to make an appointment. Some offices may not have an opening for several weeks.
If you visit an office without an appointment, we’ll do our best to work you in as quickly as possible. However, you may have a long wait or be scheduled to return another day.
Questions about where you are in the process can be emailed to motorcycle@dol.wa.gov.
