Seattle Public Utilities’ Recycle Madness Showcases the Most Maddening Items to Recycle
SEATTLE (February 24, 2022) — Seattle residents, think you’re a super recycler who knows how to correctly sort recycling, compost, and garbage? Fancy yourself a champ when it comes to filling out brackets? Looking to claim recycling bragging rights among friends and family? Then get in the (recycling) game this March with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU)!
SPU introduces Recycle Madness, a friendly, bracket-style competition that helps educate customers on how to properly dispose of everything from take-out containers to electronics to shoes.
Throughout March, customers can take part by filling out a bracket and predicting which items will make it through to advanced rounds of sortation as they try to determine what is the most troublesome or maddening item to recycle in Seattle.
Starting March 9 on Instagram, SPU’s Ask Evelyn Live hosts will channel their inner sports commentators and determine which recyclable items out of 32 will move on in each round. “Winners” on these rounds will be based on criteria including the frequency an item was searched for using SPU’s Where Does It Go online tool, the number of times it’s been the subject of an Ask Evelyn question, and general questions received by SPU solid waste staff from the community.
Seattle customers 18 and older can play along by downloading and filling out brackets via the online submission form, then submitting to AskEvelyn@seattle.gov by 12 noon on March 9. Participants will be entered to win prizes from SPU including reusable bags, compostable bags, bin stickers, and other fun items.
