McDonald’s recently spotlighted Chef John Liu, the newest ambassador for the McDonald’s 1 in 8 program, through two back-to-back events in Los Angeles that celebrated his journey from crew member to renowned chef.
On September 19, a special luncheon at Chifa LA, “Arches and Ambition: Fryside Chat with Chef John,” was moderated by AAPI author and cultural leader Jeff Yang. A packed house full of guests—including food influencers and local media—gathered to hear Chef John share how his McDonald’s roots helped shape his culinary career. The event featured memorable community moments, including a 1 in 8 varsity jacket presentation and a custom cake crafted by another 1 in 8 member.
The following evening, Chef John took the stage at Plate by Plate LA, a leading fundraiser for AAPI causes. He led a cooking demo alongside local LA food influencer Soy, while guests enjoyed Chifa’s signature dishes paired with McDonald’s Special Edition Gold Sauce to enthusiastic reviews. The evening also featured a performance by fellow McDonald’s 1 in 8 alumni, singer-songwriter Ylona Garcia.
Both events underscored McDonald’s commitment to elevating AAPI voices, culinary talent, and community connections.
