PG&E Urges Customers to Prepare as Planned Public Safety Power Shutoff Approaches

Approximately 88,000 Customers in 29 Counties Are Being Notified of the Shutoff, and Provided Resources for Information and Support

OAKLAND, Calif. — Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) continues to closely monitor a statewide fire weather system that could require a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event beginning Wednesday evening, October 14. Approximately 88,000 customers across 29 counties are currently in scope for the event. Customers have received multiple notices, and PG&E will notify customers again within four hours of their planned power shutoff.

Stay Safe and Prepare Now

PG&E encourages customers who have been notified to prepare themselves, their families and their homes for extended outages by:

  • Charging phones, medical equipment and other essential devices.
  • Having flashlights and fresh batteries available. Avoid using candles because of the fire risk.
  • Keeping a supply of drinking water, nonperishable food and necessary medications available.
  • Planning for medical needs or other needs that rely on electricity.
  • Using generators safely. Never operate a generator indoors or in an enclosed space.
  • Treating all electrical lines as energized and dangerous. Stay away from downed or damaged power lines and call 911 immediately to report them.
  • Checking on family members, friends and neighbors who may need additional assistance.

Customers can check whether their address is currently in scope and get the latest PSPS information at pge.com/PSPSupdates.

Support Is Available

Customers who may need additional support should contact 211 now. Assistance is available before, during and after an outage, including support for customers who rely on power for medical needs or have other needs. Customers can call 211, text “PSPS” to 211 or visit 211.org to get connected with available resources.

PG&E is also planning to open more than 40 Community Resource Centers across 25 counties during the potential PSPS event. The centers offer ADA-accessible restrooms, device charging, Wi-Fi, blankets, air conditioning, bottled water, snacks and other supplies. Customers can find the nearest location through the PG&E Outage Center – Ways We Can Help.

Support for Medical Baseline Customers

Approximately 5,500 Medical Baseline customers are included in the current scope. When possible, PG&E employees will conduct individual in-person visits to Medical Baseline customers who do not verify that they have received important safety communications, with a primary focus on customers who rely on electricity for critical life-sustaining equipment.

Potentially Affected Counties

Approximately 88,000 customers in 29 counties, including approximately 5,500 Medical Baseline customers, and six Tribes may be impacted by the potential PSPS.
