Happy Lunar New Year: Celebrating the Year of the Rabbit

Joyful parents giving red envelops (lai see) to their daughter and she receives them with both hands

On January 22, an estimated 1.5 billion people around the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year, a time for ushering in luck and prosperity. Lunar New Year is based on the lunar calendar and began as a time for feasting and to honor household, deities and ancestors. The New Year typically begins with the first new moon that occurs between the end of January and spans the first 15 days of the first month of the lunar calendar − until the full moon arrives.

Each year in the lunar calendar is represented by one of 12 zodiac animals included in the cycle of 12 stations or “signs” along the apparent path of the sun through the cosmos. This year is the Year of the Rabbit, which was last observed in 2011. The sign of Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity in Chinese culture.

“Lunar New Year is a time of reflection and gratitude for the prosperity we experience throughout the year,” said Sandy Walia, Bay Area Market Leader. “U.S. Bank is celebrating the Year of the Rabbit alongside our communities in a few different ways, including for the first time in several years sponsoring in-person events, such as the San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival and Parade. Additionally, inside our branches we will be offering complimentary red envelopes, or you can download a digital version online. We are looking forward to a fun and festive celebration with our customers and communities.”
