Honoring its commitment to inclusion and workplace equity, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) held its annual Pride Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday, June 3, at the agency’s headquarters in the City of Industry. This year’s theme is “Pride: It Begins With Us.”
The event featured remarks from department leadership, personal testimonies of DPSS staff, and participating countywide community partners in attendance, including Advanced Healthcare Administrators, Bienestar, Granada on Broadway, Outreach Project, Los Angeles LGBT Center, and Whittier Pride.
The ceremony culminated with the raising of the Pride Flag, a symbol of solidarity and support for LGBTQ+ communities and a reminder of ongoing efforts to promote equitable treatment and access for both DPSS customers and staff.
“DPSS’ commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is the foundation of our work,” said Assistant Director Nick Ippolito. “Celebrating Pride Month sends a clear message of welcoming and acceptance to Los Angeles County’s LGBTQ+ communities and anyone needing our help.”
The Pride Flag Raising Ceremony is one of several observances celebrated by DPSS to recognize dates and events relevant to the diverse communities that it serves. On Sunday, June 1, over 80 DPSS employees and family members marched together in the West Hollywood (WeHo) Pride Parade, a staple event in June to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride. DPSS presence at the event was organized by the department’s LGBTQ+ ambassadors, to kick off a month of Pride activities.
“It’s empowering to be yourself in this world regardless of differing opinions,” DPSS Human Services Administrator Sharlene Chamchuen shared with over 150 of her colleagues in attendance. “Being an ally means protecting my LGBTQ family, even when they’re not in the room. Do not be afraid to teach your loved ones about LGBTQ concepts which they may not yet grasp or yet understand.”
Ruby Escobar, an Eligibility Worker on the DPSS Outreach Team, stated: “It’s amazing to be a part of a workplace that is inclusive to its entire community and employees. The (Pride) parade this past Sunday was a perfect depiction of what feeling seen is like. Every interaction I’ve had [with coworkers] has made me feel comfortable, and it’s an amazing experience.”
DPSS continues to apply strategies that ensure that all customers receive services respectfully and non-discriminately. The department’s existing Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) policy ensures that all customers receive respectful, equitable access to programs and services. This, in addition to the LGBTQ+ Services and Resources webpage, is part of the department’s broader approach to compliance with nondiscrimination standards in public service.
