10/16 UPDATE: PSPS Underway-PG&E Turning Off Power for Safety

Thursday night and early this morning, all remaining customers within scope of this PSPS had their power temporarily turned off for safely ahead of forecasted high winds and dry conditions. Approximately 90,000 customers across 29 counties were forecast to be included in the scope of this PSPS event. Customers in scope have received multiple notifications about the event.

PG&E uses multiple data points—including wind speed, relative humidity, fuel moisture, slope, and fuel bed conditions—in its Fire Potential Index to determine potential risk and whether a PSPS is necessary.

The strongest wind speeds of this PSPS event occurred Thursday night (10/15) into this morning (10/16). Top Wind Speeds Recorded as of 10/15:

  • 61 mph – Pine Flat Road – Sonoma County
  • 56 mph – Santa Fe Geothermal  – Lake County
  • 55 mph – Duncan – Placer County
  • 53 mph – Bear Peak – Tulare County
  • 50 mph – SCE Cranebrake Creek – Kern County
  • 40 mph – Gaviota – Santa Barbara County
    • * 83 mph gust recorded just south of PG&E service territory in Pacoima.

Per our meteorology team, some winds at peak elevations did not mix down into lower terrain as predicted due to the complex nature of California’s terrain. Strong winds aloft in the atmosphere can rapidly mix down into lower elevations during Diablo, Mono and Santa Ana wind events significantly and rapidly increasing fire risk.

We expect the peak weather event to pass for a majority of customers today, with the exception of San Louis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Kern counties, who were de-energized on Thursday and Friday morning due to the timing of the weather event for this region .

Once the weather has passed, we will begin the process to restore power, which includes an inspection of the lines to identify any potential damage or hazards. We expect to begin the restoration process for many customers affected by this PSPS today.

Customers can check their address for updates on estimated time of restoration and get other information at pge.com/pspsupdates.
