SacRT Celebrates Grand Opening of New 7th & Railyards Station

New Green Line station connects Sacramento’s historic Railyards to regional network

SACRAMENTO, CA – The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) today celebrated the grand opening of the new 7th & Railyards Station, marking another major milestone in the transformation of Sacramento’s historic Railyards and expanding access to light rail for residents, employees and visitors.

The new station, located along the Green Line on 7th Street, officially opened for passenger service today following the reopening of the Green Line on Monday, October 12. Green Line service had been temporarily suspended during construction of the new station.

The new 7th & Railyards Station provides light rail access to the rapidly growing Railyards development, including new residential neighborhoods, retail and entertainment destinations, the new Kaiser hospital campus and the future Major League Soccer stadium.

“This is an exciting day for Sacramento and for SacRT as we welcome the Railyards into our light rail network,” said Henry Li, SacRT General Manager/CEO. “This new station represents more than a new stop on the map. It connects a historic part of our city with the region’s transportation network and provides a sustainable way for residents, employees and visitors to get to and from one of Sacramento’s fastest-growing neighborhoods.”

A Milestone for SacRT’s Light Rail System

The opening of 7th & Railyards Station comes just one month after SacRT opened the new Dos Rios Station in September, bringing SacRT’s total number of light rail stations to 55.

Together, the new stations expand access to communities and destinations and support continued development throughout the Sacramento region.

“Federal investment in public transit is a catalyst for the kind of growth we’re seeing in the Railyards,” said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. “This neighborhood is bringing housing, jobs, health care and entertainment together in the heart of our city, and people need a reliable way to reach them. With this station, SacRT is delivering real results for residents and visitors throughout the region.”

Built as Part of the Railyards Development

The new station is part of the ongoing transformation of the Railyards, one of the largest urban infill projects in the nation. Once home to Sacramento’s historic railroad operations, the Railyards is being transformed into a mixed-use community with housing, health care, retail, entertainment, transportation and public spaces.

“Our vision for the Railyards is a community where people can live, work and visit with a range of transportation options,” said Josh Leachman, Senior Vice President of Project Development for LDK Ventures, LLC. “This station shows what public-private partnership can deliver, with infrastructure that serves the neighborhood today and supports its continued growth.”

Station Funded Through Development and State Investment

The 7th & Railyards Station was not funded by SacRT. As part of the Railyards development, the developer was responsible for funding and building the light rail station.

Funding for the project included an Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) grant administered through the California Strategic Growth Council and the California Department of Housing and Community Development, with support from the California State Parks Office of Grants and Local Services. Downtown Railyard Venture also contributed equity funding.

The investment demonstrates how state funding, private development and transit infrastructure can work together to create new transportation options while supporting sustainable community development.

“The reopening of the Green Line and the opening of 7th & Railyards Station are important steps in strengthening Sacramento’s transportation network. These connections make it easier for state employees, residents and visitors to access key destinations, including the May Lee State Office Complex and the growing Railyards community,” said Toks Omishakin, California Secretary of Transportation. “Through Governor Newsom’s leadership and by integrating public transit with new housing, jobs and development, we are helping build a more connected and sustainable future for all in the Sacramento region.”

“The Railyards will shape the next chapter of Sacramento, bringing new housing, jobs, health care, entertainment, and opportunity to our downtown,” said Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty. “The opening of 7th & Railyards Station ensures people can access this growing neighborhood by light rail, whether they’re commuting to work, visiting a museum, attending a concert, or cheering on Republic FC. Connecting these destinations to public transit is an important part of building a vibrant, accessible, and economically thriving city.”

“SacRT’s vision is to make public transportation a convenient, reliable way for people throughout our region to get where they need to go. The opening of 7th & Railyards Station is another important step toward that vision, connecting a growing Sacramento destination to our regional light rail network,” said SacRT Board Chair and Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen. “As our communities continue to grow, strong transit connections will play an increasingly important role in linking people to jobs, housing, health care and entertainment while supporting the long-term vitality of our region.”

The new station represents another step in the continued development of the Railyards and Sacramento’s regional transportation network, providing residents and visitors with a convenient alternative to driving and connecting the development directly to destinations throughout the Sacramento region.
